Durham, North Carolina is home to North Carolina Central University and Duke University. However, it is also known for its rich and diverse history. Even before Bull City, the area was named in the 1800s for Dr. Bartlett Durham. The area was making history before many other areas in North Carolina. Before Europeans settled into the area, it was occupied by two Native American tribes. These tribes were the Occaneechi and the Eno. These Native Americans farmed and lived on the land. The area is also considered to be the location of an ancient Native American village that was called Adshusheer.
